Pamukkale and Denizli at a glance

The list is a selection, not a ranking. Entries 1 to 6 are all in one place, the Hierapolis-Pamukkale site north of Denizli. Entries 7 to 9 are ancient cities that need their own trip. Entries 10 to 12 are a thermal village, a cave and a balloon flight.

Hierapolis lies about 18 km north of Denizli. The site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, listed for nature and culture together. Prices below are for foreign adults in 2026. Turkish museum prices are adjusted often, so check the posted price at the ticket office.

The wide terraces of Pamukkale

Terraces, theatre and tombs (1 to 3)

The core of the visit, on one ticket.

1. Walk the travertine terraces

The white terraces form where calcium-rich thermal water leaves mineral deposits. Take your shoes off on the open terrace areas, because the surface can be slippery. Stay inside the marked visitor areas, since the natural terraces beyond them are closed. The water is managed, and nothing guarantees full blue pools on a given day.

2. See the Hierapolis theatre

The Roman theatre is one of the surviving monuments of the ancient spa city. The Attalid kings founded Hierapolis at the end of the 2nd century BC, and Greek, Roman and early Christian buildings are part of the World Heritage listing.

3. Walk through the necropolis

The burial fields lie outside the ancient city walls. Tomb buildings and sarcophagi stand in the open landscape. Which individual monuments can be entered changes, so follow the signs on the day.

Church, museum and pool (4 to 6)

Smaller stops inside the same site.

4. Visit the Martyrium of Philip

This Christian memorial building is dated to the 4th century by the Turkish museum authority and to the 5th century by UNESCO. Treat its history and its current access as two separate questions, and ask at the gate which paths are open.

5. Look at the Archaeological Museum

The museum sits in a Roman bath building and has 3 halls: sarcophagi and sculpture, small finds and finds from the Hierapolis theatre. Some pieces come from Laodicea and other regional excavations. It is free in the central 2026 price list. That does not make the surrounding site free. Opening hours are 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with the ticket office open until 5 p.m.

6. Swim in the Antique Pool

Visitors call it the Cleopatra Pool. That is a popular name for a thermal pool with ancient columns in the water, not proof that Cleopatra bathed here. Entry is extra. A visit report from September 2026 lists TRY 600 for adults, TRY 300 for children aged 7 to 12 and free entry for ages 0 to 6, with a limit of 2 hours and no jumping or diving. The pool reopened in May 2026 after about 16 months of renovation. Official listings differ on its status, so ask at the gate that it is open on your day.

Ancient cities and a quiet site (7 to 9)

Each one needs its own trip.

7. Explore Laodicea

An ancient city with an early Christian church, in the Pamukkale district of Denizli. Foreign adults pay €12. It is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

8. Take a trip to Aphrodisias

The stadium, the Sebasteion and a museum make this a full outing. One operator lists about 100 km from Pamukkale and a 14 hour private day for Pamukkale and Aphrodisias together. Entry is €12 for the museum and the site.

9. See Tripolis

The excavation site lies near Yenicekent in the Buldan district of Denizli province. It is free in the 2026 price list and open daily from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Check how you will get there before you go.

Thermal water, a cave and the sky (10 to 12)

Different ways to see the area.

10. Stay in Karahayit

The village is known for red thermal water and mud, with 58 °C at the main spring. That figure describes the spring, not the temperature of hotel pools. Hotels, apart hotels and guesthouses use the thermal water.

11. Go underground at Kaklik

The cave near Kaklik in the Honaz district is about 30 km from the center of Denizli. It has travertine steps like Pamukkale plus stalactites and stalagmites, which is why it is called Little Pamukkale. Check prices and hours before you go.

12. Fly over the valley in a balloon

Operators fly at sunrise, and flights depend on the weather. One seller advertises standard flights from €120 per person with hotel pickup.

Salda Lake in Burdur province is a separate day trip and not part of this list. It has strict protection rules, which the Salda Lake guide explains.
