Salda Lake at a glance

Salda Lake is in the Yeşilova district of Burdur Province. It is a day trip from the Denizli and Pamukkale area, not a district of Denizli, and it needs its own day. The lake is known for its pale shoreline, and photos of it travel widely. What the photos do not show is that parts of the shore are closed.

The Turkish environment ministry lists Salda among its special environmental protection areas. The most important rule for visitors concerns Beyaz Adalar, the "White Islands" stretch of shore. Entering the water, swimming and using the shore there are banned. This page is an independent guide and is not run by any authority or tour company.

The rules at Salda Lake

Read these before you go. They matter more than the photos.

No swimming at Beyaz Adalar

A notice from the Burdur environment authority dated 29 September 2020 bans entering the water, swimming and using the shore at Beyaz Adalar from 15 October 2020. A local travel company repeats the ban on water, beach use and vehicles there and describes fenced-off zones. The notice dates from 2020, but it remains the clear rule for this stretch of shore, so follow it.

What the ban does not say

The text refers to Beyaz Adalar. It does not say that the whole lake is closed, and it does not say that everywhere else is safe or allowed. Obey every sign, fence and instruction from staff, and do not assume a spot is open because others are standing in it.

Stay out of closed zones

Do not cross fences or enter roped-off areas. Do not take sand, camp or cover yourself in mud at the lake unless a sign clearly allows it.

Fees and parking

Check on the day what entry and parking cost and which areas are open. Blog posts disagree on whether anything is free, and tariffs for different areas can differ.

Planning the day

Salda is not one of the usual Pamukkale stops. Treat it as its own excursion.

A separate province

Salda belongs to Burdur Province. Aphrodisias, the other big excursion from Pamukkale, belongs to Aydın Province. Neither is a part of Denizli, and each needs its own day. Look up the route and drive time in your maps app for your starting point, and add a margin before you commit.

Ways to go

You can drive or share a car, or join a guided day trip that includes the lake. Tour listings show how many hours a day trip takes and what the price covers, so read both before you pay. If you join a tour, ask whether it stops at an open part of the shore and what the stop allows.

What to bring

Bring water, sun protection and shoes for uneven ground. Check the opening of any facility on the day rather than counting on it. Take your trash with you.

When to go

The average daytime high in Denizli passes 30 °C from June to September and reaches about 35 °C in July and August. Spring and October are milder in the long-term averages. The weather page has the full table.

Weather by month →

If your time near Pamukkale is short, the terraces, Hierapolis and the Antique Pool fit into a day, while Salda is a trip you add on purpose. The Pamukkale guide covers the terraces and the entrances.

Respecting the lake

Why the rules exist and what you can do.

A protected area is protected because it is easy to damage. Closed shoreline, vehicle limits and fences are there to keep visitors off the most fragile parts. Walk, look and take photos from where it is permitted.

Rules and zones at Salda can change, and the notice discussed above dates from 2020. On site, signs and staff decide. If a rule on the ground differs from this page, follow the rule on the ground.

Salda Lake: frequently asked questions

Can I swim in Salda Lake?

Not at Beyaz Adalar. A notice from September 2020 bans entering the water, swimming and using the shore there. The text does not cover the whole lake and does not clear other spots either. Follow signs and staff, and do not enter fenced areas.

Is Salda Lake in Denizli?

No. It is in the Yeşilova district of Burdur Province. It is a day trip from the Pamukkale area, not part of the city of Denizli.

Can I take sand or camp at the lake?

Not unless a sign clearly allows it. The lake is a protected area, and the fences and closures are there for a reason.

Can I combine Salda with Pamukkale in one day?

Salda is a separate excursion with its own route and rules. Allow a full day for it and plan Pamukkale for another day. If a tour combines the two, check the hours on the listing and what is covered.

Does it cost anything to visit?

Check the entry and parking fees on the day. Published guides disagree, and areas around the lake may have different arrangements.
