Denizli and Pamukkale in a nutshell

Denizli is a city in western Turkey and the main base for visiting Pamukkale. The white travertine terraces and the ancient spa city of Hierapolis sit on a hillside about 18 km north of Denizli, according to the state museum administration. Together they have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, listed for both nature and culture. Warm, mineral-rich water leaves lime deposits as it flows, and over time these built the terraces. The ruins of Hierapolis lie above them.

This guide covers the terraces, Hierapolis and its museum, the Antique Pool (often called the Cleopatra Pool), Laodicea, Aphrodisias, the red springs of Karahayit, Salda Lake, balloon flights, getting there, weather and where to stay. It is an independent site. It is not run by Denizli Municipality, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the state museums or any tour company. Prices are the ones listed in 2026, and in Turkey they are often adjusted during the year.

How the area fits together

One base, several different excursions.

Pamukkale and Hierapolis

The terraces and the ancient city share one ticket area with three entrances: the south gate, the north gate and an access from the village below. Most visitors spend their time here. Start with the Pamukkale guide.

Near Denizli

Laodicea lies in the Pamukkale district and is listed at €12 for foreign visitors. Tripolis is a free excavation site near Buldan, and the Kaklik cave has travertine steps and dripstones about 30 km from the city center.

Day trips further out

Aphrodisias is near Geyre in Aydin province, roughly 100 km from Pamukkale by one operator's figure. Salda Lake is in Burdur province. Neither is a district of Denizli, so plan each as a separate outing.

Hot springs

Karahayit, about 3 km from Pamukkale, is known for red thermal water and for hotels that use it. The Antique Pool inside Hierapolis is a separate swimming ticket.

Good to know before you go

Points where older guides and blog posts are often wrong.

The Antique Pool is open again, with a caveat

Local press reported the reopening in May 2026 after about 16 months of renovation, and a visitor report from September 2026 describes normal operation. Two official pages still list the pool differently, one as open and one as closed. Check on the day.

The museum is free, the site is not

The Hierapolis Archaeological Museum is listed as free on the central tariff list. That does not make the rest of Hierapolis free: the site ticket still applies.

Hierapolis and the museum →

Gates close at different times

The museum website showed 08:00 to 18:00 in October 2026, with the pedestrian entrance closing at 17:00 and the south and north gates at 18:00. A longer summer schedule exists. Do not assume the October times apply in July.

Tickets and hours →

Salda Lake is not a beach

An official notice from 2020 bans entering the water, swimming and using the shore at Beyaz Adalar, the white-sand area. Local operators still repeat the ban. Treat the white shore as a place to look at.

The airport shuttle

The airport authority points to the city transport service Hava Ulasim for the shuttle, phone 0850 808 20 20. Older articles call it by another name. Ask for the current timetable.

Getting there →

Summer is hot

Long-term averages for Denizli show daily highs around 35 °C in July and August, and 24 °C in October. The record for August is 44.4 °C. See the table on the weather page.
